How to Identify Your Chain Size
Chainsaw chain is identified by three things: pitch, gauge, and drive link count.
- Pitch – This refers to the spacing between the chain’s teeth (matched to your sprocket).
Common sizes: .325, 3/8 (.375), .404.
- Gauge – This is the thickness of the drive links (the part that sits in the bar groove).
Common sizes: .050 (1.3mm), .058 (1.5mm), .063 (1.6mm).
- Drive Link Count – This determines the length of your chain.
Only count the drive links (the inner “dog-tooth” shaped links that sit in the bar), not the cutting teeth.
Where to Find This Info
Most of the time, pitch, gauge, and link count are stamped on your bar near the powerhead. If not, you can also find an identifier stamped on the drive links themselves. You can reference that identifier using our guide here: FAQs / Chain / Granberg’s Complete Guide to Ripping Chain.
